- Named Endowment Funds
The Seymour Newstat Endowment Fund will make distributions each year to support Passover seders for the Café by the Bay program. The fund will exist in perpetuity and will be used for Holocaust education, after there is no longer a need for Café by the Bay programs.
It was the joy that a particular JFCS program brought to her father’s life that prompted Joyce Newstat, along with her spouse, Susan Lowenberg, to establish a named endowment fund in his loving memory.
Seymour Newstat did not talk much about his life during World War II—which included time in a work camp, from which he’d later escape—but as he aged, he opened up more about his harrowing experiences. His tranformation came about, in part, as a result of his participation in JFCS’ Café by the Bay program, which offers social and educational activities for Holocaust survivors, as well as ample opportunities to shmooze and talk about subjects of mutual interest. “A whole new world opened to him with Café by the Bay,” says Joyce. “He developed new friendships toward the end of his life.”
Both members of the JFCS Holocaust Center’s Council of Children of Survivors, Joyce and Susan decided that the Newstat Fund should specifically support the Passover seder because it was one of Seymour’s favorite holidays. “My father was a quiet man,” says Joyce, “but he really took over at Passover. We knew that it would be the perfect way to honor him.”
