A survivor of Auschwitz, Sam came to this country in 1947, the only member of a large extended family to have escaped death. After many years as a shipping clerk, he finds himself frail and alone at 89, living on a modest income and the support of JFCS’ Seniors At Home program, which provides him with subsidized home care and care management.”I don’t know how I’d carry on without this help,” says Sam, who has diabetes and gout and still suffers nightmares from the war. “The people at the Seniors At Home are angels and JFCS is an absolute godsend.” Sam receives expert care thanks to JFCS donors who want to ensure that older people in our community– including Holocaust survivors–can continue to live with dignity. When Sam can, he attends JFCS’ Café by the Bay educational and social programs for survivors. He is also grateful to the agency for helping him secure monthly war reparations from Europe. “I’m on a very limited budget, so even this small monthly stipend helps.”“My wife, Nancy Livingston, and I are proud to support JFCS’ seniors programs,” says longtime friend Fred Levin. “We believe that it’s part of our heritage to take care of the elderly and the ailing and that JFCS does a stellar job in upholding this tradition.”
As the holiday season approaches, please join friends in ensuring that Sam and other seniors and Holocaust survivors are able to receive needed care and services. Thank you for your generosity and care!
