Yom Hashoah: Out of the Shadows: Rediscovering Artists, Musicians, and Poets

During the Memorial Ceremony there will be a special presentation of The Righteous Among The Nations Award by the Consul General of Israel Dr. Andy David. The esteemed honor is given by the State of Israel to non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jewish lives. John van Dorp will be accepting the award on behalf of his grandparents, the late Abram and Cornelia van Dorp who lived in Schipluiden, Holland and hid a Jewish couple in their apartment for nine months (1943 – 1944). Their incredible story includes the family’s outwitting Nazi soldiers after they broke into the next-door apartment. John van Dorp will be joined on stage by Jack Menco the grandson of the Jewish couple, Solomon and Helena Nihom, who hid in the van Dorp’s apartment.

San Francisco’s Holocaust Remembrance Day will open with the film screening of Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh, a documentary about the young Hungarian poet. A discussion with noted Jewish literary scholars Chana Kronfeld (UC Berkeley), and Giddon Ticotsky (Stanford University) will follow.

Attendees will also have the option of choosing from five workshops where they can hear from Holocaust survivors and other Holocaust authorities.

The event includes a continuous reading of names of victims of the Holocaust from 3:00 pm onward. If community members would like to have the names of their loved ones included during this reading, they should fill out this online form (http://tinyurl.com/gwhm9ve) or call 419-449-1213.
