Plucked from the ashes of Auschwitz and published in 2014 by the JFCS Holocaust Center, Rywka’s Diary: The Writings of a Jewish Girl from the Lodz Ghetto has been an international sensation, sold alongside The Diary of Anne Frank. The tattered school diary written in Polish by 14-year-old Rywka Lipszyc has captivated readers around the world and has been translated into 15 languages. It is now being published in its native Polish tongue.
This month Rywka’s powerful words became available throughout Poland. The new and beautifully designed edition was published in partnership with Austeria Publishing House in collaboration with the internationally acclaimed POLIN Museum in Warsaw. This edition includes new supplemental content and will debut at a national teachers’ conference, making Rywka’s story accessible to thousands of students throughout Poland. All proceeds from the publication of Rywka’s Diary benefit the JFCS Holocaust Center and Holocaust education worldwide.
Leading the Way in Worldwide Holocaust Education
The JFCS Holocaust Center’s eminent on-staff Holocaust historians are experts on Rywka’s Diary and develop teaching curriculum with educators all over the world. The Holocaust Center’s website serves as a rich teaching resource, detailing the history of the diary and its themes.
Earlier this summer JFCS collaborated with the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow on a new innovative exhibit featuring Rywka’s words, titled The Girl In The Diary, In Search of Rywka Lipszyc, to glowing reviews. The exhibit allows visitors to enter the women’s world of the Lodz ghetto while spotlighting the Jewish identity of the teen author. The exhibit runs through March 2018, with plans for it to then leave Poland and travel internationally.
A feature-length documentary is also currently in production and investigates the gripping mystery of the long-lost diary.
