Helping Our Aging Community Live Safely: A Free Presentation at Congregation Shomrei Torah on Aug. 20
  • Press Releases

On Wed., Aug. 20, from 12:00 to 1:30 pm, experts from Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS) and its Seniors At Home Division will present Helping Our Aging Community Live Safely, a free talk that will focus on the ways that concerned community members can ensure the physical, financial, and emotional well-being of loved ones as they age. The lunch-and-learn presentation—attendees are encouraged to bring their own brown-bag lunch—will learn if there are any red flags or markers they should look for in attempting to identify possible abuse and what they can do to help if they suspect that their friends, neighbors, or relatives are being abused.

The presenters of Helping Our Aging Community Live Safely, taking place at Congregation Shomrei Torah, 2600 Bennett Valley Road, Santa Rosa, are Diana Klein, MFT, Regional Director of JFCS in Sonoma County and Michael O’Connor, Staff Fiduciary at JFCS.

Instances of elder abuse are on the rise. The National Center on Elder Abuse recently cited studies indicating that approximately eight to 10 percent of elderly American experience some form of mistreatment, whether it involves physical abuse, emotional and/or physical neglect, or financial abuse (including scamming and outright theft).

While the program is free and open to the public, an RSVP is required. Because the presentation is taking place in a Jewish house of workshop, the synagogue kindly requests that no pork products or shellfish be brought onto its premises. To RSVP or receive more information, call 707-578-5519 or email[email protected].
