In times of uncertainty, having trusted guidance can make all the difference.
With immigration policies shifting and global events creating new challenges, many individuals and families are unsure where to turn for accurate information and reliable support.
Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common immigration questions we hear, along with resources and ways to connect with JFCS for personalized help. When it comes to protecting your rights and your family, taking action early is essential—and you don’t have to do it alone.
I’m worried about my or my family member’s visa or green card application. What should I do?
You should consult with an immigration attorney in your area. JFCS offers immigration consultations at a lower cost compared to private providers, and if you are low income, we can reduce or possibly waive the consultation fee. If you’re a new client, please visit www.jfcs.org/legal to request a consultation. If you’re a previous client, contact us at [email protected] or 415-449-2906.
Can JFCS help if I’ve received a deportation notice?
If you’ve received a Notice to Appear (NTA – Form I-862) in immigration court, you will need deportation/removal counsel. JFCS does not currently offer representation in immigration court. If you are facing deportation or have an upcoming court date, we recommend reaching out to an organization that can provide representation. In San Francisco, you can find them at immigrants.sf.gov/help/deportation-counsel. You can also find an immigration attorney through the American Immigration Lawyers Association by calling 1-800-954-0254.
How can I protect my rights during an immigration enforcement action?
During an immigration enforcement action or encounter with ICE agents, it’s important to know your constitutional rights. All persons in the U.S. have the right to remain silent and to speak with an attorney. You also have the right to refuse any search of yourself, your belongings, or your home if the officer does not have a warrant signed by a judge. JFCS periodically holds information sessions and distributes Know Your Rights (KYR) materials, but you can also find them online here:
- In English, Spanish, and Chinese: San Mateo County Know Your Rights
- In Ukrainian and Russian: Ukraine Task Force
Do you have advice for individuals under DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) or TPS (Temporary Protected Status)?
For DACA and TPS recipients, it’s important to stay updated on your status. For DACA updates, visit the USCIS DACA page. For TPS updates by country, visit USCIS TPS. Be sure to renew or re-register on time to avoid gaps in your status or work authorization. Contact us if you need assistance with DACA or TPS at www.jfcs.org/legal. Previous clients can reach us at [email protected] or 415-449-2906.
What should I do if my application for residency, citizenship, or work authorization is delayed?
If your case is pending beyond normal processing times, make an inquiry here. You can also check processing time estimates here, or call USCIS at 1-800-375-5283. Always record the service ID or number USCIS provides for your requests. You may also contact your U.S. congressional representative for assistance: Find Your Representative.
Are there resources for undocumented individuals seeking legal support?
Yes, many resources are available at immigrants.sf.gov. JFCS also provides legal support for undocumented individuals in the Bay Area. To speak with us, visit www.jfcs.org/legal to request a consultation. We offer consultations and legal services based on income and need.
How can I afford legal services if I’m on a limited income?
JFCS offers services at a fraction of the cost of a private attorney. We use a sliding scale based on income and offer payment plans, subsidized fees, and pro bono services. If you are concerned about USCIS fees, we may be able to help you with fee waivers. If you don’t qualify for a fee waiver, consider reaching out to Mission Asset Fund (MAF) for fee financing. Contact us at [email protected] or 415-449-2906 if you have questions.
How can I stay informed about changes in immigration law?
You can sign up for alerts from USCIS. Google Alerts for specific terms like “TPS” or “DACA” may also help. Stick to reputable news sources like the Associated Press or your local newspaper to avoid misinformation.
How do I contact JFCS for immigration-related assistance?
New clients can request a consultation at www.jfcs.org/legal. Previous clients can reach us at [email protected] or 415-449-2906.
