Until a few years ago, when Louis, a concentration camp survivor in his late 80s, came to JFCS for assistance, he had never received the Holocaust reparations due to him. That changed quickly as Louis’ JFCS case worker helped him successfully apply for restitution claims. “The funds I receive each month make a big difference,” says Louis, who lives below the poverty line. “Otherwise, my income would not cover expenses.”
In addition to benefiting from JFCS’ Holocaust Reparations Program, Louis now receives daily kosher meals through JFCS’ Food Programs. “If it weren’t for these meals, I don’t know what I’d be eating,” he says. “What I’d been preparing for myself wasn’t very nutritious. My health is now better than before.”
Louis is one of hundreds of Holocaust survivors who yearly receive assistance from JFCS.
From Seniors At Home services, adult day health care, and spiritual care to social, cultural, and educational activities through our Café by the Bay programs, JFCS meets the diverse needs of Bay Area survivors, almost all of whom are well into their 80s. Many of our clients who survived the Holocaust also participate in JFCS Holocaust Center programs, including the Next Chapter Project, which connects local survivors to high school students seeking to learn more about the Holocaust.
