The Herb Shore Successful Aging Fund, established by Lee Morgan to honor the memory of her teacher and mentor, helps to educate our community about concepts and techniques to ensure a beneficial aging process by consciously making healthful and empowering choices.
Lee Morgan, a gerontologist, lecturer, and exercise specialist who developed the F.A.S.T. – 50 (Fitness and Strength Training for Older Adults 50-85+) Certification Program, celebrated her adult bat mitzvah by applying the gifts she received to establish a named continuity fund memorializing the life and work of her esteemed teacher, Dr. Herb Shore.
Often referred to as the “guru of nursing home administration,” Dr. Shore, who died in May 2000, had a long and illustrious career—as a nursing home administrator who founded the Jewish Home for the Aged in Dallas; as a professor and the founder of the gerontology department at the University of North Texas; as a board director for a variety of health-related civic and national organizations; as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging over three decades; and as a widely published author on the subject of geriatrics. It is no wonder that his family’s longstanding favorite joke was that Dr. Shore had “flunked retirement!”
In tribute to her friend and professional associate, Lee notes: “Besides my own parents, he has been the most important and influential person and guide in my life.” Through her fund and through the series of Successful Aging Symposiums that Lee has developed, she will continue the work of Dr. Shore, helping people of all ages learn how to become physically, socially, financially, and spiritually fit for their “golden years.”
