When a raging wildfire swept through the Bowyer’s house in Northern California last fall, it destroyed more than just their property—it took their home and years of cherished memories. This devastating loss came at an already overwhelming time, as the family was grappling with serious health challenges and the recent loss of a beloved family member. The holidays loomed ahead, promising none of their usual warmth and joy.
“It challenged us to stay strong and lean on each other,” the family said about their feelings of initial hopelessness, “The wildfire was our rock bottom.”
Lost and devastated, the family turned to their local synagogue. The Rabbi understood the dire nature of their circumstances and contacted JFCS, who quickly responded by reaching out to assess the family’s needs. Help was on the way.
The situation seemed daunting and the path to recovery was difficult to see, but Sydney, their JFCS case worker, was there to provide comfort and support while she gathered the resources to help them begin to recover.
The first step began with addressing immediate needs. The JFCS team worked quickly to secure the family a vehicle and a trailer, providing them with a sense of independence and a safe place to rest while they put the pieces back together.
Funds from JFCS Emergency Family Assistance also provided the Bowyers with heat for the cold winter months, food for their table, and clothing to replace what was burned, each piece of support helping to rebuild the stability they’d lost in the flames.
“Sydney stepped in and helped us figure out what we needed in order to pick ourselves up and keep going,” the family recalls, “When it felt like there was nowhere to turn, JFCS came to our aid and helped us start over.”
While helping with material needs was essential, Sydney and the JFCS team knew that emotional support was just as important during this overwhelming time. They sat with the family through their grief, helped them process their losses, and stood by their side as they navigated the complex journey of rebuilding their lives.
“The compassion given to our family while recovering will never be forgotten,” they reflect. “I truly appreciate everyone that has helped, prayed, and supported us during this time. We are forever grateful to JFCS for being here for us.”
