Ayala Feder-Haugabook, an incoming senior at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay, has had a busy summer. While gearing up for an August trip to Israel, where her brother is in the army, she also participated in a first-in-a-lifetime experience: a paying summer internship. Ayala was one of approximately 60 teens throughout San Francisco, Marin County, and the Peninsula who were selected to be part of JFCS’ Summer Internship Program, which provides valuable work experience—both at JFCS and at various organizations and businesses in the Bay Area.

In addition to working in various offices and acquiring on-the-job skills, Ayala and the other students learned about office etiquette, professional ethics, interviewing techniques, and other skills that will serve them well for life. It was a great way for them to make new friends, develop their talents, and find mentors.

“The experience was wonderful,” says another intern, Domenic Marchese, an incoming sophomore at Archbishop Riordan High School, who worked for JFCS’ Seniors At Home division this past summer. “I learned a lot, and I was able to talk to people about my academic and professional interests, which include English and journalism.”

Though the young interns have now completed their jobs and are heading back to school, JFCS’ YouthFirst Program, which coordinates the Summer Internship Program, offers many other activities and programs throughout the year that allow young people to develop their interests and serve their community.
