Finding a place to live is one of the Bay Area’s greatest challenges. For Molly, a 29-year-old with significant learning differences, the perfect home has been JFCS’ Gary Shupin Independent Living Community, which offers residential and comprehensive services to young adults with developmental and other disabilities. “Shupin is ideal for Molly,” says her mother, Margaret, a former psychiatric nurse who helped her daughter with her housing search.
“Molly wants to be independent, and Shupin provides the support so that she can remain so,” continues Margaret. “When Molly went to San Francisco City College to enroll in the CNA program, the people at Shupin went with her to the orientation. She never would have done this on her own. The encouragement from people other than her parents is giving her the confidence to follow through. She is doing things she never did before, and she’s just blossoming.”
Margaret says that as she and her husband, Richard, wanted to find a living situation for Molly that would not only nurture her independent spirit, but would also relieve them of concerns about her future well-being. Shupin provides them with those assurances. In addition to benefiting from Shupin’s comprehensive services—which include care management, mental health counseling, support group, money management, advocacy, and volunteer support—Molly enjoys the vast array of activities at the Shupin Social Club, which offers outings, fun workshops, and holiday programs to both residents and non-residents.
