About 1 in every 150 children in the U.S. has autism or a closely related disorder, according to a recent survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The high number of children affected - approximately 560,000 nationwide - surprised researchers, who consider it "a major public health concern."
JFCS' Parents Place has noted an increase in requests for information and services from parents who have children with special needs. Families of children with autism and other special needs require specialized resources, support and education. Many request help navigating the school system, managing family communication, and addressing related stresses. In response to this need, JFCS has launched three new Centers for Children with Special Needs in San Francisco, Marin and the Peninsula.
The JFCS Centers for Children with Special Needs will offer dedicated resources and support for children and their families. JFCS Coordinators will provide case management services to families coping with a wide range of special needs, including: autism, Asperger Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD); physical, cognitive and neurological impairments; chronic illnesses; learning disabilities; and severe emotional disturbance. Officially opening this spring, the Centers for Children with Special Needs will be located at Parents Place offices in San Francisco, Marin and the Peninsula.
