Seniors-At-Home to the Rescue:
Jackie?s Story

Having a stroke can really set you back. Jackie had one 3 years ago, and she has also had to deal with diabetes and Bell's Palsy. When complications from her diabetes recently caused a wound that would not heal properly, Jackie turned to Seniors-At-Home for help.

In addition to arranging for medical care to help Jackie recover from her wound, a Seniors-At-Home care manager visited Jackie for a comprehensive assessment and identified several other issues that needed to be addressed, including isolation and depression. Now, a Seniors-At-Home homecare worker comes to Jackie?s house for a few hours every day to help with day-to-day activities and she also has weekly visits from a Seniors-At-Home Senior Companion volunteer, thus ensuring both her physical and emotional needs are taken care of and she is able to live a happier, healthier life at home.

Finding Reliable Wheels:
Leroy's and Karla?s Stories

Unable to drive any longer, 80 year-old Leroy would frequently miss important doctors? appointments because the people he relied upon for rides weren?t very reliable and his only local relative lives and works in the East Bay. Fortunately, his Seniors? At?Home case manager was able to arrange for Be the Wheels volunteers to take Leroy to the doctors, pharmacy and grocery shopping, so now Leroy has rides he can depend upon.

Be the Wheels has also been of great service to Karla, a Holocaust survivor with severe depression and early onset Parkinson?s disease. Although she is attends an adult day care program twice a week, she is still very isolated and that only contributes to her loneliness and feelings of despair. Her Be the Wheels volunteer drives her to her psychiatrist, and also gives her rides to social events like musical performances at Rhoda Goldman Plaza. This kind of weekly human contact with a caring and compassionate Be the Wheels volunteer has had a huge impact on Karla?s emotional state and helps her feel connected to the commuity.
