Seniors·At·Home, a nonsectarian division of Jewish Family and Children's Services, is the Bay Area's most comprehensive provider of compassionate, quality care to older adults. The mission of Seniors·At·Home is to help older adults live safe, independent lives in their own homes. Volunteers of all ages play a vital role in carrying out this mission.

 Volunteer Programs:

Senior Companions
Visit with isolated seniors, offering friendship, companionship and support.
Commitment: 1-2 hours per week. (Available in all regions)

Case Aides
Work directly with social workers to provide practical services and emotional support to the frail elderly.
Commitment: 1-2 hours per week. (San Francisco only)

Holocaust Survivor Volunteer Visitors
Make a special commitment to visiting with elderly survivors of the Holocaust. Provide companionship and support to individuals. JFCS provides a historical overview of the Holocaust and sensitivity training before you begin your visits.
Commitment: 1-2 hours per week. (Available in SF, Marin, and on the Peninsula)

Holiday Visiting
Individuals, families and groups visit nursing and retirement homes, and seniors in their own homes, during the holidays to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah and Passover with Jewish seniors.
Commitment: 3 hours per holiday. (Available in all regions)

Safe-At-Home Telephone Reassurance Callers
Provide friendship and a sense of security through regularly scheduled phone calls. Calls are made from Jewish Family and Children's Services in San Francisco.
Commitment: 2-4 hours per month. (San Francisco only)

Mensches in the Trenches
Share your "fix-it" skills with seniors needing repair work in their homes. Tasks include installing grab bars in a bath, installing smoke detectors and other safety-related projects.
Commitment: 2-8 hours per month. (San Francisco only)

Be the Wheels
Drive seniors to medical appointments and help them with grocery shopping. A great opportunity for people who have weekday time available. Mileage is reimbursed.
Commitment: 2-3 hours per month. (Available in all regions)

Tenderloin Shabbat Project
JFCS sponsors holiday celebrations and Friday Oneg Shabbats for Jewish seniors who live in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco.
Commitment: 3 hours per event, 10 events per year. Volunteer for one or more.
(San Francisco only)

Cafe by the Bay
Cafe by the Bay is a place where survivors gather at weekly social events not only to discuss Holocaust issues, but also to enjoy each other's company, live music, and educational programs. If you have a car and a little extra time, you could be of great service to local Holocaust Survivors by driving them from their homes to our popular weekly social program and back.
Commitment: 1-2 hours per week. (San Francisco, Marin, Palo Alto, and Foster City)

Math Tutor at After School Program for Elementary School Students
Do you have one hour per week to give?

Spend your time volunteering with elementary school students, tutoring, hanging out, mentoring and making a difference! Volunteers work with elementary school students in a group setting, providing supportive friendship, encouragement, guidance and academic assistance. Just an hour a week can help students succeed at home, at school and with their friends. The elementary school program takes place at Hebrew Academy, on Tuesdays from 4-5pm. For more information, contact Taylor Epstein at 415/359-2463 or TaylorE@jfcs.org.

Become a Compassionate Companion
When people are suffering, whether they are in decline, undergoing challenging treatments, or near the end of their lives, helping them live safely and independently in their homes, and improving quality of life becomes more important than ever. Volunteers play a vital role in carrying out this mission. Seniors At Home in collaboration with CPMC is offering a comprehensive 25-hour Palliative and End of Life Care Volunteer Training Program beginning March 18, 2008. No prior medical or hospice experience is necessary. To learn how you can make a difference in just a few hours a week, please contact Rachel Kesselman at 415/449-1288 or RachelK@jfcs.org.

Senior Companion in Sonoma
Help to brighten the day of a senior with your friendly visit. We need volunteers to visit isolated and/or frail seniors living alone, in board and care homes or assisted living facilities on a weekly basis for one hour.
