A full array of specialized programs that support Émigré seniors to maintain their highest level of health and independence, including adult day health, homecare, meal delivery, counseling and health education lectures.
Citizenship Services
Need to apply for citizenship? Prepare for the exam? Register to vote? JFCS offers citizenship preparation classes, American democracy civics forums, and assistance with the INS application process.
Legal Assistance
Refugee advocacy and assistance with green cards, family-based petitions, travel documents, and naturalization applications are provided by the JFCS emigré legal staff.
L'Chaim Adult Day Health Center
Émigré seniors receive bilingual health and rehabilitation services, participate in classes & social activities, and enjoy delicious, hot lunches through our L'Chaim Adult Day Health Center.
Refugee Resettlement Services
Bilingual casework, financial assistance, information and referral, volunteer tutoring, legal immigration services, and acculturation classes are all part of JFCS' resettlement and immigration services. Vocational English classes and specialized job training programs for recent émigrés are also provided, through the Jewish Vocational Service.
Bilingual Mental Health Services
JFCS offers a comprehensive array of psychiatric and mental health services to Russian-speaking members of the community suffering from depression or other problems related to their immigration.
Gen-R (79ers): For Young Adults in their 20s and 30s
Gen-R is a program that builds community among young adults (20s and 30s) who emigrated from the former Soviet Union as children. It provides a vibrant and dynamic community for those who have been disconnected from Russian and Jewish community and offers programs to explore and celebrate the richness of the Russian-Jewish-American identity, as well provides an opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the Russian and Jewish community.
Émigré Youth Development Program
The Émigré Youth Development Program, which has over 300 émigré teens participating, is a collaboration between JFCS' Parents Place and Émigré Services. It offers a wide variety of life skills, work study, community service, and leadership programs and is committed to being a safe space for teens to explore issues and questions relevant to their lives.
YouthFirst Program
JFCS' youth program to help teens develop the necessary life skills to move into young adulthood smoothly, successfully and responsibly.
Free "Talking Books"
Have trouble reading due to declining vision or difficulty holding a book? Need materials in Russian, Romanian or Yiddish? JFCS can help you get free "Talking Books" from the Jewish Braille Institute (JBI) Library. To learn more, click here.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer opportunities include providing English conversational support, citizenship preparation assistance, translation, office help, holiday invitations, pro-bono professional service, computerized information retrieval, and more-based on your needs, interests, skills and availability. You do not need to know Russian or Yiddish to volunteer. To explore émigré volunteer opportunities, click here.
LGBT Family Services
LGBT services for people from the former Soviet Union and their families. Confidential counseling and support available for teens, adults and families to discuss sexuality issues. Clinicians speak both Russian and English. For information, contact Gayle Zahler at (415) 449-2900 or GayleZ@jfcs.org.
